When Is It Time for a Refret?
Divots, buzzing, and choked bends — how to tell a fret dress from a refret, and why period-correct wire matters.
Dress or refret?
If your frets have visible divots under the plain strings but still have height, a fret dress restores them. Once the crowns get low enough that bends choke out, it is refret time.
Vintage instruments
A refret with the wrong wire changes how a vintage guitar feels and can hurt its value. We stock period-correct profiles for Fender, Gibson, and Martin instruments from the 1930s onward.
What is included
Every refret includes board cleanup, nut work, and a full measured setup. Plan on two to three weeks in the shop.
