Finish Checking: Friend or Foe?

That spiderweb of fine cracks in old nitro is part of the story — until it starts flaking. Here is where we draw the line.

What checking is

Nitrocellulose lacquer shrinks over decades and cracks into the fine spiderweb pattern collectors call checking. On a vintage instrument it is part of the story — proof the finish is original.

When to act

Checking becomes a problem when edges lift and flakes start leaving the guitar. At that point conservation — stabilizing the edges without overspraying — preserves both the look and the value.

The golden rule

Never overspray original finish to make checking disappear. It cannot be undone, and it costs the instrument its history and a large part of its market value.
